This beautiful Wahaika Pounamu Pendant has been carved from New Zealand pounamu (greenstone/ jade) by Moreton carvers based in Hokitika, South Island.
The Wahaika (which literally means 'mouth of the fish) was primarily used in close-in fighting, being designed for thrusting rather than smashing down in a club-like manner.
Wahaika was not only used in battle, but also in ceremony and speech making, where it is used by rangatira to accentuate the delivery of particular points.
Pounamu is the Māori name for greenstone or nephrite jade which is only found in the South Island. It is an extremely tough material and is said to absorb the owners essential spirit, feeding it back to them and enhancing their strength.
