This beautiful Whale Tail Pounamu pendant has been carved from New Zealand pounamu (greenstone/ jade) by Moreton carvers based in Hokitika, South Island.

In Māori mythology the first Māori came to New Zealand on the back of a Whale. Whales are believed to be descended from Tangaroa, atua or deity of the ocean and sea creatures. Therefore, the symbol of a whale tail is highly prized in Māori culture and represents one's journey and protection in and around the ocean.

Pounamu is the Māori name for greenstone or nephrite jade which is only found in the South Island. It is an extremely tough material and is said to absorb the owners essential spirit, feeding it back to them and enhancing their strength.
